Since climate determines the type of vegetation that develops in any area, global warming will result in a change in the regional distribution of vegetation, especially towards the poles where the greatest increase in temperature is expected. For example, the boreal forests of Asia, Scandinavia and Canada may push further northwards, replacing the tundra, while the southern edge of the forests might also move northwards because of increasing competition from deciduous tree species and grasses which find the conditions more favourable. This would obviously have long-term effects on the wildlife that inhabit these areas.
 
In the northern latitudes, growing seasons may be extended, increasing the potential for more food to be produced, but over some areas increasing temperatures may lead to longer dry seasons and droughts. This could have serious implications for world food production. The grain belts of the USA and the former USSR may both become much less productive, leading to economic and political implications.
 
Sea-levels will rise due to glaciers melting and the thermal expansion of water. This may cause floofing of low-lying areas, coastal erosion and salination of soils, making them much less fertile. No one is sure by how much the sea-level might rise around Britain, but a frequently quoted estimate for the year 2050 appears to be 0.3 to 0.6 metres. The most vulnerable areas in Britain are in the south-east, where the land is actually sinking relative to the sea. Any rise in sea-level might thus pose a serious threat to property, agriculture, coastal and inland ecosystems, and amenities and recreation.
 
It is sometimes referred to as the ozone shield. Over-exposure to UVB radiation (280-320 nm) can cause :
a. mutations in DNA
b. increased sunburn and skin cancer
c. increased radiation blindness and cataracts
d. damage to the human immune system
e. decreased photosynthesis and therefore decreased crop growth rates
f. disruption of insects which use UV to see or navigate.
 
Although the chemicals that destroy the ozone layer are also important greenhouse gases, the overall picture is more complicated. Destruction of ozone in the stratosphere actually leads to a cooling of that layer which, in turn, has a cooling effect on the troposphere. Oddly enough then, some of the global warming effect of CFCs is offset by their effect in the ozone layer.
 
The mechanism by which ozone is destroyed by CFCs is summarised in the equations below :
a. CFCl3 + uv (190-220nm) = CFCl2 + Cl
b. Cl + O3 = O2 + ClO
c. ClO + O = O2 + Cl
The chlorine then goes on to destroy more ozone.
